Meat processing has a unique wastewater profile

Wastewater discharged from meat processing plants will be laden with fats, proteins, blood, paunch and generally split into two streams, identified as ‘red’ and ‘green’. The wastewater strength can be determined by several different measurements, typically TN (Total Nitrogen), BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and O&G (Oils & Grease).

Many different methods are used to treat this wastewater, and depending on the location, restrictions are mostly placed around nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous in treated wastewater being discharged to the environment.  Depending on whether reuse, discharge to sewer or the environment is required, Waterform can engineer a solution to meet all compliance requirements along with odour control.


Improve lagoon-based treatment


Conventional lagoon based treatment systems need to be upgraded at many sites, with sites being imposed with new limits for nutrients and volume. New technologies are being implemented to improve lagoon systems’ performance along with other secondary treatment methods. Advanced treatment of secondary treated wastewater to achieve potable standard water quality for use in boilers, cooling towers, irrigation, wash down and more is also a viable option for many sites – a value-added solution underpinned by strict risk management to enhance payback.
