NEXTSAND is a High Performance Polishing Filtration Media. It replaces multimedia for a reduced footprint and higher quality filtrate. Alternative filtration media (such as Zeoplus, Turbidex, Aquazel) are from the family of common clinoptilolite zeolites, where as nextSand has some very unique properties such as the high Opal content (very hard, and gives its green tinge), and is higher in purity – that is, it has less ‘soft rocks / minerals’ within the rock mineral structure, such as lime and clays (calcite, lime and mica) which are soft and lead to ready bed attrition. Surface area measurements in 1999 for clinoptilolite filter media, based on analytical measurements (Gemini Model 2360, Micrometrics, Inc., Norcross, GA) indicated: a) that the clinoptilolite used for water filtration ranges from 14 to 29m2/g; and b); the presence of mineral contaminants (such as calcite, lime & clay) negatively impacts the surface area.
nextSand has a much higher surface area – Based on crystallography, the basic atomic structure of nextSand media consists of four (4) atoms of oxygen equally spaced. With this tetrahedral crystal structure (Si2O4) oxygen atoms are shared with other Si2O4 structure to form the unique even crystal framework.
This gives nextSand a consistant surface area of 26 – 27m2/gram, whereas common clinoptilolite zeolites have a published surface area of 14m2/gram, up to 25.
The surface area of nextSand is indicative of nextSand’s high purity. It is also the reason for the high filtration velocity nextSand is to be operated at. The rare high purity of the nextSand mineral sets it apart from all other known clinoptilolite deposits and the presence of Opal in nextSand’s mineral structure provides superior strength and stability. High surface area also equals higher filtration efficiency and effectiveness.

Only one USA mine produces high purity clinoptilolite, (any of a group of hydrated silicates of aluminum with alkali metals, occurring as secondary minerals used for their molecular sieve properties because they undergo dehydration with little or no change in crystal structure) and is the sole supplier of nextSand™ filter media. The nextSand™ is mined, crushed, sieved (e.g. 14 x 40 mesh) and kiln dried. Natural, high purity nextSand™ filter media has the high surface area and high porosity in addition to surface micro-crystals that makes it an ideal filter media.
